EL CARIBE VIBRO EN LA CONFERENCIA DE TURISMO
SOSTENIBLE DE LA CTO

Basseterre, Septiembre 12, 2003. Caribbean Adventures-. Las islas de St. Kitts y Nevis conformaron un marco inolvidable para los delegados que participaron en la V Conferencia de Turismo Sostenible de la CTO, (Caribbean Tourism Organisation por sus siglas en inglés). Del 9 al 13 de setiembre del 2003 los mas brillantes cerebros de la región se dieron cita en el espectacular St. Kitts Marriott Royal Beach Resort para abordar la vasta temática relacionada con el turismo sostenible en el Caribe, que no es otra cosa que las comunidades se beneficien de los ingresos generados por el turismo, siendo este el principal rubro de ingreso de los países caribeños.

Desde Norman Girvan, secretario general de la AEC (la Asociación de Estados del Caribe por sus siglas en inglés) hasta Jean Holder secretario general de la CTO, pasando los mas renombrados exponentes, desde Guyana, Surinam, todo el Caribe antillano, Colombia, Panamá, Guatemala, Belice y hasta la Riviera Maya; coincidieron en señalar que es nuestra herencia ancestral lo que debemos preservar, desarrollar y fomentar a toda costa.

El ministro de turismo y comercio de St. Kitts Dwyer Astaphan abrió con una disertación emocionante sobre la herencia de los antiguos esclavos a pesar de la devastación dejada por los diversos conquistadores.

Entre los mas connotados expositores y anfitriones hemos de mencionar al “trini” Keith Nurse, cuyo detallado estudio sobre los festivales en el Caribe interesó de sobremanera al tambien panelista y especialista urbano del Banco Mundial, Roberto Chavez, como a todos los delegados; al famoso estudioso del arte del Caribe Alwin Bully (de la isla de Dominica); a la arquitecto panameña Vanesa Spadafora; al surinamés Jan-Bjarmi Bjarnason; a la jamaiquinica Karen Ford-Warner, secretaria general adjunta de la CTO; a Donald Sinclair, director de la máxima autoridad de turismo de Guyana; a la especialista de turismo sostenible de la CTO, la venezolana Mercedes Silva y a su homologa y directora de la AEC Zoila Gonzales Maicas.

“ La Organización del Turismo del Caribe, OTC, estuvo muy complacida en contar este año con la colaboración de la AEC en la organización de la Conferencia Anual del Caribe sobre Desarrollo de Turismo Sostenible. Esta colaboración hizo posible la expansión de este evento a países del Gran Caribe que no son miembros de la OTC, como Centroamérica y Colombia. Ambas organizaciones planean continuar con esta colaboración en futuras conferencias y en otras actividades relacionadas con el desarrollo del turismo en la región”, -dijo la dinámica Mercedes Silva.

En el Caribe se entiende como turismo sostenible el uso óptimo de los recursos naturales, culturales, financieros y humanos en función del desarrollo nacional, sobre bases equitativas y autosostenibles, con la finalidad de ofrecerle al visitante una experiencia única y seguridad.

Los “Study Tours” permitieron a los delegados conocer las iniciativas sostenibles de St. Kitts y Nevis, como hermosas plantaciones, ancianos ingenios azucareros, vistas alucinantes e interesantes proyectos de rescate de naufragios en los que los buzos pudimos participar de la mano del presidente del grupo marítimo y arqueológico anglo-danés Simón Spooner, presidente de la ADMAT, quien nos condujo a Whitehouse Bay, bahía ubicada en la parte suroeste de la península. Nosotros mismos practicamos las técnicas de búsqueda en un interesante naufragio e hicimos interesantes hallazgos de objetos anteriores al año 1750.

Hemos de destacar la calidad de la puesta en marcha de la sala de prensa: las computadoras volaban y la atención del oficial de comunicaciones de la CTO, Jonson Jhonrose fue inmejorable.

Conociendo a St. Kitts y sus moradores, concluímos que es donde hay paz y felicidad es que el sector turismo se fortalece, como es el caso de este destino bendito por la naturaleza; si no hay desarrollo sostenible no puede haber ninguna de las dos cosas. Y es la preservación de la cultura, el respecto por lo autóctono, las costumbres y la sabiduría popular, que las tradiciones de nuestros pueblos caribeños se fortalecerán beneficiando así a las comunidades. Estuvimos muy satisfechos al comprobar que la agricultura es uno de los pilares fundamentales del turismo en esas islas.

Felicitamos a Loreto Duffy-Mayers y al Casuarina Beach Resort de Barbados por el premio otorgado por la revista Islands. Este premio reconoce a la persona, organización o compañía en cualquiera de los países miembros de la Organización de Turismo del Caribe (OTC), que haya desarrollado un producto turístico único y atractivo.

Aruba será la sede la la próxima conferencia de turismo sostenible de la CTO u OTC.
